Our organization took shape in the fall of 2022 when many of us were disturbed by the Sewer Board's lack of transparency in decision making. Meeting agendas and minutes were not being shared. There was also frustration that questions and comments from the public were generally being ignored.
We incorporated in January 2023 as a nonprofit organization in Montana. This type of group has the broad purpose of promoting the common good and general welfare of the community. Such organizations can advocate for specific causes and even take part in some political activities. Because of this political involvement, contributions to Concerned Citizens are not tax deductible.
All organization board members and advisors are volunteers committed to doing the homework necessary to make informed recommendations about waste treatment. We aim to serve as an information source by developing an in depth understanding of relevant technology, construction issues, legal background, and more. We attend Sewer Board meetings and ask questions in an effort to find the most affordable and environmentally sound waste management strategy for our valley.
Although strictly speaking, we are not membership organization, we do maintain a mailing list and provide updates on relevant topics. We also accept contributions to help cover legal advice and printing costs.
We have members in all three of the communities that are located in the Upper Soda Butte Valley. The "838" of our name was chosen to reflect our literal interconnectedness via our enduring and unique telephone number prefix.
